"The video SYNCHRONATOR demonstrates the audio modulations of a video signal, which were produced by means of an audio mixer. This work of Bas van Koolwijk and Gert-Jan Prins falls in the category of medium-specific media art. It is reminiscent of the early days of video art, when artists experimented with image and sound. SYNCHRONATOR came into existence during a residency at Impakt (Utrecht, the Netherlands) in June 2006, and marked the starting point of their cooperation.
Bas van Koolwijk concentrates mainly on digital experiments, while Gert-Jan Prins mostly works with analogue techniques. They both carry out research into the relationship between sound and image, as well as the limits of what is audible and visible.
They used their residency to apply old techniques to state-of-the-art apparatuses in a new way. In concrete terms, this meant that they made video recordings of their studio at Impakt. This video material was transformed by means of audio equipment, which resulted in jerky black-and-white images of something that can vaguely be recognized as a room. The image is reminiscent of a television whose reception is poor. Normally their treatment of the signal would make it unreadable for video recording and playback equipment, but they solved this problem by the use of the SYNCHRONATOR, which they developed themselves. The technology used is totally analogue.
The project will not come to an end with the appearance of the video: the artists will continue to work on their experiment during various performances."
